If China Shuns Dollar, Look Out U.S. Bonds: William Pesek Jr. 
Jan. 28 (Bloomberg) -- Malaysia isn't a place traders look for 
clues about the U.S. dollar, yet Asia's No. 10 economy may be 
offering some ominous ones. 

They can be found in a recent report on international reserve 
holdings at Bank Negara Malaysia, the nation's central bank. It 
states that Malaysia made a $2.1 billion ``revaluation gain'' in 
2004, ``arising mainly from the depreciation of the U.S. dollar 
against the major currencies.'' 

Central banks are always reticent to detail their holdings, but 
one can't help but wonder if Malaysia is buying an increasingly 
amount of euros -- or even yen -- these days. Its central bank 
sure didn't make that kind of cash holding the dollar, the 
currency to which its own, the ringgit, is pegged. 

The plot thickens when you consider how such a shift away from 
the dollar would jibe not only with comments from top Malaysian 
officials, but trends throughout Asia. 

Here in Malaysia, for example, Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad 
Badawi recently said he is seeking ways to reduce the economy's 
reliance on the dollar for trade. Indonesia has mentioned it is 
considering trimming its holdings of U.S. Treasuries. The same 
goes for Thailand, according to the Financial Times. 

China also has been in the news as traders speculate that Asia's 
No. 2 economy may pull the plug on dollar-denominated debt. Such 
a move by the second-biggest holder of U.S. Treasuries after 
Japan could send shockwaves through global markets. 

Fan Gang's Comments 

Hence all the fuss over comments by Chinese economist Fan Gang. 
Fan isn't a government official; he's director of the state- 
owned National Economic Research Institute in Beijing. The 
connection seemed close enough for traders who found great 
relevance in Fan's comment that China has lost faith in the 
dollar, to which its currency is pegged. 

``The U.S. dollar is no longer, in our opinion is no longer, 
(seen) as a stable currency and is devaluating all the time, and 
that's putting troubles all the time,'' Fan said, speaking in 
English, at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. ``So 
the real issue is how to change the regime from a U.S. dollar 
pegging to a more manageable reference, say euros, yen, dollars -
- those kind of more diversified systems.'' 

Paul Donovan, London-based senior global economist at UBS AG, 
seemed to speak for many traders and investors when he said: 
``This in fact is a scenario we consider to be highly likely.'' 
Certainly more likely than, say, China letting the yuan trade 
freely. 

Turning to the Euro 

Again, Fan isn't a Chinese policy maker, and it's unclear how 
close he is to the economic decision-making process. Still, his 
views have a certain logic to them. Irony, too. The U.S. has 
been using its might to bully China into revaluing the yuan. Yet 
it seems it is U.S. weakness -- a fragile dollar -- that may be 
the catalyst. 

It means now is as good a time as any for this region to avoid 
losses ahead of any surge in U.S. debt yields. After all, in 
real estate, it is all about location, location, location. With 
markets, it's timing, timing, timing, and waiting means Asian 
central banks may lose even more. 

Confidence in the dollar wasn't enhanced this week by President 
George W. Bush's record budget deficit forecast of $427 billion 
for this fiscal year. It belied assurances that the White House 
will bring one of the world's most worrisome economic imbalances 
under control. 

All this has investors turning to the euro. Once Asian central 
banks do, the dollar's woes will worsen. By buying vast amounts 
of Treasuries, Asian central banks are delaying the rise in U.S. 
yields that would typically accompany a falling currency. If 
Asians pull the plug, U.S. rates could skyrocket. 

Reckoning Approaching? 

Central banks here don't buy U.S. debt out of altruism. Hoarding 
dollars is necessary to hold down currencies to boost Asian 
growth. Yet dumping dollars would result in stronger Asian 
currencies and, by extension, Asian gross domestic product. 

Smaller economies like Indonesia, Malaysia or Thailand may be 
able to trim dollar holdings without undermining their own 
economies. The same can't be said of Japan and China; combined, 
they own $906 billion of the roughly $1.1 trillion of U.S. 
Treasuries held overseas. 

Still, the day of financial reckoning that investors fear may be 
getting closer. 

It has long been said that Japan's bond market is a bubble 
waiting to burst. Even with a national debt approaching 150 
percent of GDP, 10-year Japanese debt yields just 1.32 percent. 
Asians have to wonder if U.S. rates are irrationally low, too. 
Do yields at 4.19 percent for U.S. 10-year debt really 
compensate investors for the risks they face? 

The U.S. finds itself in a be-careful-what-you-wish-for 
situation here. If China tomorrow announced it was letting the 
yuan float, as the U.S. wants, its central bank wouldn't need 
anything near the $191 billion of U.S. debt it holds. Massive 
dollar selling could follow. 

Asian central banks like China's have become America's bankers, 
financing its excesses through good times and bad. It's now up 
to Asia to decide whether to extend the U.S.'s line of credit. 
The U.S. should be warned that the odds are moving less and less 
in its favor.

Three US marines killed south of Baghdad
Three US marines have been killed in combat south of Baghdad, 
the US military has said. 

"Three US Marines were killed in action and two others wounded 
on January 31 while conducting security and stability operations 
in northern Babil Province," the statement said. 

Northern Babil includes a restive Sunni region south of the 
capital which became known as the "triangle of death".

15-92 British Soldiers Killed in a Plane Crash North of Baghdad

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - 

A number of British military personnel died when an air force 
transport plane crashed northwest of Baghdad on Sunday, Prime 
Minister Tony Blair said. 

Ski TV reported that at least 15 British soldiers were killed 
in the crash. Islam Memo, which reported from the Ski TV, did 
not mention the cause of the crash, whether it was a resistance 
missile or not.

The C-130 Hercules transport plane involved in the crash can 
carry up to 92 troops, 64 paratroopers or military equipment.

Blair, in a statement on British television, did not say how 
many had died. President Bush said both U.S. and British 
military personnel had lost their lives on Sunday.

No information has been released about the cause of the crash, 
but U.S. officials said helicopters had spotted the wreckage, 
which was strewn over a wide area.

The British Defense Ministry, announcing the crash earlier in 
the day, said "An RAF C-130 Hercules crashed at around 1725 
local time (0925 EST) on 30 January some 20 miles northwest of 
Baghdad."

Media reports said the aircraft was on its way to the city of 
Balad from Baghdad when it crashed.

Last Wednesday, 30 U.S. marines and one sailor were killed when 
an American military helicopter crashed close to the Jordanian 
border in the deadliest single incident for American troops 
since they invaded Iraq. Islam Memo reported that it was downed 
by a resistance SAM-7 missile.

Six Marines killed in battles in Hit. 

Six US Marines were killed and five others variously wounded in 
clashes that broke out Saturday between the Resistance and the 
4th Marine Division. 

The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam in the city reported 
that fighting erupted in the al-Iskan neighborhood, 
the  Abdallah ibn al-Mubarak neighborhood, and the village of 
az-Zawiyyah east of Hit. The fighting lasted about four hours, 
from 1pm to 5pm Saturday afternoon. Resistance fighters used 
light and medium weapons and fired barrages of 62mm and 82mm 
mortars. 

The fighting destroyed two Humvees and disabled a US tank. Six 
Marines were killed and five more wounded moderately to 
severely. Witnesses confirmed those losses. Clouds of smoke 
billowed into the sky from the two Humvees and the back of the 
tank. 

The Brigades of the Legions of the Promise of the Truth 
(Kata ib Jahafil al-Wa d al-Haqq) posted a communiqu  on the 
Grand Mosque of Hit at 6pm Saturday announcing that it had 
carried out the attacks in which four Resistance fighters, one 
of them a fraternal Arab fighter from Kuwait, were martyred. 

After the battles, US troops closed all roads and bridges and 
the city was still sealed off when the correspondent filed his 
report, posted at 9:45pm Mecca time Saturday night. 

Meanwhile, the correspondent of Mafkarat al-Islam reported that 
the residents of the neighborhoods of as-Sikak, al-Iskan, 
and  Abdallah ibn al-Mubarak gathered up all the ballots that 
the US forces had distributed and made a big pile out of them 
and then set them on fire at 6:15pm Saturday, local time, in a 
demonstration of their rejection of the election farce. The 
residents of the az-Zawiyyah village did the same. 


Resistance bomb destroys US vehicle, killing six American 
troops near al-Hadithah. 

An Iraqi Resistance bomb exploded under a US military column 
that was transporting a number of prisoners to the US  Ayn al-
Asad base   formerly known as the Iraqi al-Qadisiyah base   
near the western city of al-Hadithah.. 

The correspondent of Mafkarat al-Islam in the city reported 
that witnesses said that a high explosive bomb exploded at 
12:25pm Saturday, totally destroying a US armored vehicle after 
flipping it upside down. The blast produced a deep crater on 
the side of the road. 

The witnesses said that all the American troops who had been 
aboard the vehicle were killed. They said that the Americans 
had to bring in a giant crane to pick up the overturned and 
wrecked vehicle and that took about two hours. When they 
finally got into the vehicle, they found all the troops had 
been killed. 

A tribal chief who lives next to the highway told the 
correspondent that six US troops were killed inside the vehicle 
and that a number of other American soldiers were wounded as 
were a number of the Iraqi prisoners who were in the ZiL 
transport vehicle that was following the stricken armored 
vehicle. 

US occupation forces, for their part, arrested a number of 
members of the local al-Bu Fahd tribe and members of some other 
tribes, charging them with facilitating the activity of the 
Resistance, according to what the father of one of the captured 
youths told the correspondent. 


Al-Qa idah battles US forces in al-Fallujah. 

In a dispatch posted at 11:45pm Mecca time Saturday night, the 
correspondent of Mafkarat al-Islam reported that fierce 
fighting was still raging in al-Fallujah between US troops and 
the Resistance organization known as the Base of the Jihad in 
the Land of the Two Rivers, an organization under al-Qa idah. 

The correspondent reported that the fighting began in the al-
 Askari neighborhood at about 9pm Saturday night, local time. 
In about half an hour, the fighting spread to the Second ad-
Dubbat neighborhood and intensified in the area near the as-
Sumud Sports Club where US forces called in helicopter support 
and air attacks by F-16 fighter bombers. The aircraft pounded 
the areas where the Resistance fighters were concentrated. The 
Resistance, for its part, responded with 120mm mortar rounds 
and high-explosive rockets, believed to be Grads. 

The correspondent reported that the skies of the city were 
clear at the time of the night prayer, but were, at the time of 
writing, marked by blotches of yellow. Local residents are 
unsure as to whether those are some sort of chemical weapon, or 
simply dust stirred by exchange of bombardments. 

The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported seeing six 
plumes of thick smoke and flying sparks rising near the as-
Sumud sports club. From the thickness of the smoke, I 
it is believed that these are stricken UStanks and armored 
vehicles. 

At 10:30pm US forces opened up with heavy machine guns on the 
Resistance fighters. The Resistance responded with light arms. 
Four clouds of white smoke were seen rising, one of them over 
the al- Askari neighborhood and the rest over the as-Sumud 
Sports Club. These are believed coming from houses struck by 
the US bombardment. 

On 23 January 2005, most of the Iraqi Resistance organizations 
resolved to pull out of al-Fallujah but the Base of the Jihad 
in the Land of the Two Rivers resolved to return three days 
ago. Their engagements with the Americans began on the eastern 
and southern ends of the city. 


Resistance bombards US base in ar-Rutbah Saturday morning. 

Iraqi Resistance forces blasted the main US base in ar-Rutbah 
in western Iraq near the Jordanian border with 20 Katyusha 
rockets at about 7:30am Saturday. The rocket blasts set of 
numerous secondary explosions, as American munitions inside the 
camp started blowing up. Witnesses told Mafkarat al-Islam that 
plumes of smoke rose thickly into the sky over the facility. 


Resistance shoots down US helicopter Friday night. 

Resistance forces shot down a US helicopter Friday evening as 
it was taking off from the US base east of the city at 8:30pm. 
Eyewitnesses told Mafkarat al-Islam that the craft fell inside 
the US facility. Local observers believed it was carrying the 
bodies of US troops killed in the downing of another helicopter 
two days earlier, killing 31 Americans. 


Resistance destroys seven polling stations, killing seven US 
troops, 13 puppet police. 

A correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam in western Iraq s al-
Anbar Province reported that seven election stations were 
destroyed in the areas of al-Habbaniyah, al-Khalidiyah, ar-
Ramadi, Hit, Hadithah, al-Qa im, and al-Baghdadi in al-Anbar 
Province on Saturday. 

Witnesses told the correspondent that four election stations 
were attacked by Resistance car bombs, mortar rounds, and 
explosive devices during the early morning hours of Saturday. 
Thirteen puppet police and seven US troops were killed in the 
Resistance attacks. Five Resistance fighters were martyred. 
Three of those were martyrdom fighters who drove booby-trapped 
cars into election stations. 

Meanwhile,  Abd al-Wahid, a puppet administrative official told 
Mafkarat al-Islam that seven of the total 11 election stations 
in the province had been destroyed. He expressed his surprise 
that they had been demolished, noting that the polling stations 
were nothing but  propaganda facades.  He said,  Nobody in this 
province is going to go vote.  

Popular disdain for the elections is overwhelming in the 
province, despite massive use of force by the Americans. On 
Friday US troops drove around populated areas broadcasting 
threats against the populace if they failed to take part in the 
election farce. People understood that Americans  veiled threat 
was that they risked having their water and electricity cut off 
if they failed to vote. The Americans announced that if they 
did not vote, the US$108 million that has been earmarked for 
reconstruction in al-Anbar would go elsewhere. 

Nevertheless, 33 members of the puppet police announced their 
resignations on Saturday after receiving warnings from the 
Resistance. The policemen handed in their weapons to the 
Resistance organization, the Brigades of Asadallah al-Ghalib 
ibn Abi Talib, according to a commander in the organization who 
spoke to Mafkarat al-Islam. 

The commander said that the policemen who resigned proclaimed 
their repentance in front of Resistance members, and provided 
them with  very useful information.  


US brings in puppet collaborator troops to replace police who 
resigned en masse. 

Mass resignations of puppet policemen in ar-Ramadi prompted US 
forces to call in two units of the puppet so-called  Iraqi 
rapid deployment force.  These troops arrived Saturday evening 
to guard the puppet polling stations that are to be set up 
during the night, since the Resistance destroyed all the 
existing ones. 

The correspondent of Mafkarat al-Islam reported that most of 
the so-called  Iraqi rapid deployment  troops are members of 
the Shi i chauvinist collaborationist Badr Brigades. Together 
with them are a few Kurdish Peshmergah collaborationist gunmen. 


Resistance pounds al-Habbaniyah base. 

Iraqi Resistance forces bombarded the US base in al-Habbaniyah 
with fifteen 120mm mortar rounds sending clouds of smoke rising 
into the sky Saturday morning. US Chinook transport helicopters 
were seen landing to evacuate the dead and wounded. 


Resistance hits US post west of as-Saqlawiyah. 

Iraqi Resistance forces fired four 82mm mortar rounds into a US 
command post west of as-Saqlawiyah at 2pm Saturday, destroying 
three Humvees and inflicting an undetermined number of 
casualties. 


Resistance drives US forces out of ar-Ramadi Saturday morning. 

US forces and their puppets completely withdrew from ar-Ramadi 
on Saturday at 7am, leaving no puppet administrator in the 
city. At 6:30 Iraqi Resistance forces had fired thirteen 82mm 
mortar rounds at the US base in the glass works, setting off 
secondary explosions of US munitions and sending thick smoke 
rising into the sky. The Resistance also destroyed all the 
election stations in the city. 

US forces had been guarding one of those stations located at 
the main police station , but the Resistance razed it to the 
ground in a bombardment with mortars and four Katyusha rockets. 
At the time he filed his report at 9:32pm Saturday night Mecca 
time, the Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent reported that there 
were still bodies of American troops, collaborator translators, 
and puppet election commissioners in the rubble of that 
building. 


Baghdad. 


At least two American invaders killed in rocket attack on US 
embassy in Baghdad. 

At least two Americans were killed and four more wounded in an 
Iraqi Resistance rocket attack on the US embassy in the area of 
the Republican Palace in Baghdad, known to the invaders as 
the  green zone.  

A spokesman for the US aggressors told the American Associated 
Press that one of the dead Americans was a  civilian, and the 
other a sailor. The wounded Americans included two soldiers, 
on  civilian  and a person of unknown identity. 

The US spokesman, who refused to be identified, refused also to 
provide any more details. 


Occupied Baghdad locked down by US, stooge forces on eve of 
sham  election.  

Hours before voting is set to begin in the election charade 
that the US-imposed regime is to hold on Sunday 30 January, US 
forces have turned the occupied Iraqi capital into a barracks, 
sealed off from the outside world. 

Only a very small number of streets in Baghdad are still open 
to traffic and pedestrians as, according to the Egyptian 
newspaper al-Ahram, the US and puppet troops have installed 
massive cement barricades at the entrances and exits from major 
thoroughfares and even many side streets in the city. 

Numerous checkpoints have been set up and Iraqi puppet police 
are mounting patrols searching cars and demanding IDs from 
drivers and passengers. 

Iraqi citizens, meanwhile, are preparing to spend the time at 
home. Before the election theatrics begin, they have gone to 
markets to stock up on provisions and fuel to tide them over a 
day of unknown events. 


Al-Hillah. 


Five Poles killed in roadside bombing in al-Hillah. 

Five Polish aggressor troops were killed when an Iraqi 
Resistance roadside bomb well concealed under a pile of trash 
exploded and destroyed their vehicle in al-Hillah at 3:40 in 
the as-Sikak neighborhood north of al-Hillah on Saturday. The 
Polish column in which the stricken vehicle was traveling was 
using loudspeakers to broadcast propaganda in connection with 
the election farce to be staged on Sunday. Also killed in the 
blast was an Iraqi collaborator who was broadcasting the 
election propaganda on behalf of the invaders, according to 
puppet police captain  Ali  Abd az-Zahra . 

Local eyewitnesses said that the blast was so strong that it 
threw bodies of the dead a long distance. Some were found on 
the other side of the road.

``I'm short the dollar,'' Gates, chairman of Microsoft Corp., 
told Charlie Rose in an interview late yesterday at the World 
Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. ``The ol' dollar, it's 
gonna go down.'' 

Gates's concern that widening U.S. budget and trade deficits are 
undermining the dollar was echoed in Davos by policymakers 
including European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet 
and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder. 

The dollar fell 21 percent against a basket of six major 
currencies from the start of 2002 to the end of last year. The 
trade deficit swelled to a record $609.3 billion last year and 
total U.S. government debt rose 8.7 percent to $7.62 trillion in 
the past 12 months. 

``It is a bit scary,'' Gates said. ``We're in uncharted 
territory when the world's reserve currency has so much 
outstanding debt.'' 

A week before Group of Seven officials meet to discuss currency 
policy, Trichet repeated the ECB's concern over the dollar's 
drop to record lows against the 12-nation euro currency. 

Euro Rally 

The euro rose as high as $1.3666 per on Dec. 30 and last bought 
$1.3045. A stronger euro reduces the competitiveness of European 
exports and crimps growth among the nations sharing the 
currency. 

``The governing council of the ECB has repeated a very, very 
short sentence, namely that the sharp moves upwards of the euro 
were unwelcome and that we thought they were counterproductive 
from the economic growth perspective,'' Trichet said at a Davos 
panel discussion today. 

The last meeting of G-7 finance ministers in Washington in 
October said that exchange rates should reflect economic 
fundamentals and that excess volatility in currencies is 
``undesirable.'' 

U.S. growth reached a five-year high of 4.4 percent in 2004, 
outpacing Europe for the 11th time in 12 years. The euro region 
probably grew 2.1 percent, according to European Commission 
estimates. 

Deficit Risks 

U.S. President George W. Bush is pledging to clamp down on 
spending to halve the budget deficit -- $427 billion in the 12 
months through Sept. 30 -- during his second term. The 
administration releases its fiscal 2006 budget on Feb. 7. 

The U.S. budget shortfall is ``the No. 1 risk, disregarding 
geopolitical risks'' to the global economy, German Deputy 
Finance Minister Caio Koch-Weser said in a Jan. 27 interview in 
Davos. He urged Bush to present a ``credible'' plan for getting 
the deficit under control. 

Chinese central bank adviser Yu Yongding said in Davos the U.S. 
government should do more to tackle its record current- account 
deficit and ease pressure on China to loosen its currency's peg 
to the dollar. 

``The U.S. should take the lead in putting its own house in 
order,'' Yu said. ``It's the root cause'' of global imbalances. 
``China will make its contribution, but the world should not put 
disproportionate pressure'' on the country. 

Deficit Cutting 

U.S. policymakers including Trade Representative Robert Zoellick 
defended Bush's deficit-reduction plans and blamed the U.S. 
trade gap on sluggish growth in Europe and Japan, which reduces 
foreign demand for American goods. 

``One has to get the budget deficit down, but the question is 
how do you do it,'' Zoellick said today on the same panel with 
Trichet. ``It's at least our view that you want to do it by 
slowing the growth of spending.'' 

Gates reflected the views of his friend Warren Buffett, the 
billionaire investor who has bet against the dollar since 2002. 
Buffett said last week that the U.S. trade gap will probably 
further weaken the currency. 

``Unless we have a major change in trade policies, I don't see 
how the dollar avoids going down,'' Buffett said in an interview 
with CNBC Jan. 19. 

Gates in December joined the board of Berkshire Hathaway Inc., 
the investment company that Buffett runs. Forbes magazine's list 
of billionaires ranks Gates, 49, No. 1. Buffett, 74, is second, 
with more than $30 billion. Almost all of it is in Berkshire 
stock. 

Gates described China as a potential ``change agent'' for the 
next two decades. ``It's phenomenal,'' Gates said. ``It's a 
brand new form of capitalism.'' 

Gates's $27 billion foundation in September received approval 
from China's foreign-currency regulator to invest as much as 
$100 million in the nation's yuan shares and bonds.

Two killed in Baghdad embassy attack
Insurgents have killed two Americans in an audacious rocket 
strike on a US embassy compound in Baghdad, after killing 17 
other people across Iraq on the eve of a landmark election. 

The militants have sworn to turn the poll into a bloodbath and 
kill anyone who dares to vote. 

The rocket struck the American compound in Baghdad's huge 
fortified Green Zone after dark, setting off an explosion that 
could be heard throughout the city centre. 

"It hit near the embassy building," spokesman Bob Callahan said. 

"There are two dead and four who are wounded ... all Americans." 

The attack deepened fears of an insurgent blitz on election day 
and demonstrated their ability to strike at the heart of the 
interim government and American power in the Green Zone, a vast 
complex on the west bank of the Tigris river. 

It could also worsen the fears of Iraqis' about voting on Sunday 
in the country's first multi-party election in nearly half a 
century. 

Before the embassy attack, interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi 
urged fractious religious and ethnic groups to vote and 
defy "enemies trying to break us and to break our world". 

Even as US-trained security forces barricaded streets, sealed 
land borders and closed Baghdad airport, more than a dozen 
polling stations were attacked and bloodshed continued to 
overshadow the final electoral countdown. 

A suicide bomber struck a US-Iraqi security centre in the town 
of Khanaqin, north-east of Baghdad. 

The US military said three Iraqi soldiers and five civilians 
were killed. 

Al Qaeda's network in Iraq, led by Jordanian militant Abu Musab 
al-Zarqawi, claimed responsibility and threatened mayhem when 
voters go to the polls from 7:00am local time on Sunday. 

"For the last time, we warn that tomorrow will be bloody for the 
Christians and Jews and their mercenaries and whoever takes part 
in the [election] game of America and Allawi," it said in a 
statement posted on an Islamist website. 

Most other attacks were concentrated in the Sunni heartlands of 
central Iraq where the insurgency has been fiercest and where 
many once-privileged Sunnis plan to boycott the election. 

Under pressure to start bringing US troops home after the 
election, US President George W Bush said their mission must 
keep going to help the new government get its footing. 

"Terrorist violence will not end with the election," he said.

Helicopter crash killed two US soldiers
Two US soldiers have been killed when their helicopter crashed 
in western Baghdad, the US military says.

"Two Task Force Baghdad soldiers died when their helicopter went 
down in the south-western portion of the Iraqi capital," the 
statement said. 

The military had reported the crash on Friday but the fate of 
the two-man crew had not been immediately known. 

Five other soldiers from the same Baghdad-based division were 
killed in a string of attacks on Friday, as insurgents stepped 
up their onslaught ahead of Sunday's landmark general elections. 

The deaths have raised the overall toll for US soldiers killed 
in Iraq to 1,414 since the US-led invasion of March 2003, 
according to Pentagon figures.

Two US troops killed in Baghdad attacks
Two US soldiers were killed and three others wounded in two 
separate attacks in Baghdad, the US military said.

The attacks came as tension rose in the capital two days before 
Iraq's general elections. 

"An improvised explosive device detonated at about 2:00 pm on 
Jan 28 in southern Baghdad, killing one Task Force Baghdad 
Soldier and wounding three others," the military said in a 
statement. 

It announced separately the death of another soldier in a small 
arms fire attack in northern Baghdad.

US soldier shot dead north of Baghdad
A US soldier was shot dead in the Diyala province north of 
Baghdad Thursday, the US military said in a statement. 

"One 1st Infantry Division Soldier died from a gunshot wound 
sustained about 2:05am (2305 GMT Wednesday) January 27 on 
Forward Operating Base Normandy, near the town of Muqdadiyah," 
it said. 

The statement did not elaborate on the circumstances of the 
incident.

Roy Hallums hostage video monitored Tuesday shows an American 
abducted last November by gunmen in Baghdad pleading for his 
life and appealing to Arab rulers including Libyan leader 
Moammar Gadhafi to intercede to spare his life.

Roy Hallums, 56, was seized Nov. 1 along with Robert Tarongoy 
of the Philippines during an armed assault on their compound in 
Baghdad's Mansour district. The two were working for a Saudi

On the tape, Hallums, with a rifle pointed at his head, stated 
his name and said "I have worked with American forces." 

"I am please asking for help because my life is in danger

of his selfishness and unconcern for those who've been pushed 
into this hellhole." 

Hallums, speaking slowly, said he was asking for help 
from "Arab rulers especially President Moammar Gadhafi because

"I also ask that Arab leaders help me in this situation so I 
can be released as quickly as possible from this definite end," 
he added. 

"I would remember this favor for the rest of my life should my 
life remain and I ask my family to help because my health is in

A US Marine Corps helicopter has crashed in western Iraq 
killing at least 31 US servicemen while six other soldiers were 
killed in clashes with armed groups.



"Early this morning, 30 Marines and one sailor of the 1st 
Marine Division and the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing of the 1st 
Marine Expeditionary Force died when their CH-53E 'Super 
Stallion' helicopter crashed near Ar Rutbah [in] Al Anbar 
Province here in Iraq," said Lt General John Sattler from his 
headquarters at Falluja. 

 

The US military had earlier issued a statement saying "a US 
Marine Corps transport helicopter crashed on 26 January at 
approximately 1.20am (2220 GMT Tuesday) near al-Rutbah while 
conducting security and stabilisation operations".


 

Earlier in the day, speaking to Aljazeera from Ramadi, Muhammad 
Abd al-Rahman, an independent Iraqi journalist, said local 
residents reported seeing several US military helicopters on 
low-altitude flights over the area where the crash took place, 
which is apparently beyond the reach of civilians.

 

US forces use transport aircraft for ferrying both goods and 
troops in response to frequent attacks on US convoys on Iraq's 
roads, Abd al-Rahman said.

 

Vulnerable aircraft

 

But as these aircraft fly at relatively slow speeds and at low 
altitudes, they are vulnerable to rocket attacks by fighters

Four US marines were killed in

The US Marines declined to provide the cause of the crash.

device detonation about 4.30 pm (1330 GMT) 26 January," said a 
US military statement. 

The latest fatalities mark the highest single-day toll of US 
soldiers in Iraq - 37 - pushing the total to 1418 since the 
March 2003 invasion.

The crash came as US-led forces, Iraqi national guardsmen, 
interim government offices and other election targets were hit 
around the country.

Allawi To Keep Food Rations

Forgive me if I cannot whip up too much excitement over the 
coming Iraqi elections. Apart from my innate scepticism as to 
US intentions after its pretexts for going to war were blown 
apart, the words of an Iraqi diplomat who insisted he was a 
close friend of Eyad Allawi add fuel to the embers. 

"The outcome of the elections is more or less a done deal," he 
told me. "Allawi is set to continue." 

I took this statement with a fistful of salt until I read this 
in last Sunday's Times: "fears of a takeover by Shiite clerics 
have prompted speculation that Washington might have been 
trying to strike a deal with Al Sistani to keep Allawi as prime 
minister after the election". 

Tipped to oust Allawi is head of the Supreme Council for 
Islamic Revolution in Iraq Abdul-Aziz Al Hakim and he is 
clamouring for American troops to go home pronto. 

Since Bush has promised the occupying forces will abide by the 
wishes of a sovereign Iraqi government, his call could prove 
embarrassing. 

Let's face it, US troops aren't about to go anywhere especially 
since neighbouring Iran features large on the 2005 pre-emption 
menu. 

We would have to be either na?e or on Prozac to believe the 
Bush administration is poised to walk off into the sunset sans 
oil and sans face, leaving an Iraqi government representing the 
Shiite majority free to cosy up to the Iranian ayatollahs. 

Even if the United States isn't engaged in manipulative hanky 
panky, the election is defective from the start. 

UN monitors are understandably scarce on the ground and three 
or four Sunni provinces (containing almost half the country's 
entire population) will be virtually excluded due to rising 
levels of violence. 

Allawi's attempt 

Indeed, heralding the new Iraqi democracy are closed borders 
and airport, travel restrictions and curfews, while candidates 
and the location of polling stations will remain secret until 
the last minute. 

Allawi's bid already looks suspect after he doled out $100 
bills to reporters hoping for favourable coverage. 

The Riverbend girl blogger refuses to be seduced. She says she 
found an "Elect Allawi" pamphlet promising "security and 
prosperity for occupied Iraq", which fitted nicely at the 
bottom of a parakeet's cage. 

She complains: "People in many areas are being told that if 
they don't vote ?the food and supply rations we are supposed to 
get monthly will be cut off," and asks, "what sort of democracy 
is it when you force people to go vote for someone or another 
they don't want?" 

The idea that Allawi has a mega following is frankly laughable. 
This is a former Baathist who fell out with Saddam Hussain and 
forged links with the CIA. 

Few had even heard of him before he replaced Ahmad Chalabi in 
the Pentagon's affections. So low has Chalabi sunk that the 
interim Iraqi Defence Minister is threatening to hand him over 
to Jordan where he was convicted in absentia for embezzlement. 

Allawi cheered on the flattening of Fallujah and supports the 
American military presence, so it is hardly likely he would 
attract a significant popular vote. 

Iraqis know that Allawi perpetuates the lie their country is 
now a sovereign state. 

Clearly aware who his masters are, Allawi's speech before the 
US Congress was ridiculed as being designed to aid Bush's re-
election and probably dreamt up by Bush's own speechwriters. 

"We are succeeding in Iraq," he said, before thanking his 
audience for "your brave vote in 2002 to authorise American men 
and women to go to war to liberate my country ?". 

No condemnation concerning the use of cluster bombs, which are 
regularly responsible for small children losing their limbs. No 
condemnation of the use of depleted uranium tank shells 
responsible for a prevalence in birth defects and cancers. 

No condemnation of the deaths of up to 100,000 Iraqi civilians 
and not a word about the torture and abuse of prisoners at Abu 
Ghraib. 

Allawi is no patriot and if he remains prime minister after the 
vote, then, as far as I am concerned it was a sham, a pre-
arranged set-up just as the Iraqi diplomat confided it would 
be. 

The release of an audio tape by the elusive Abu Musab Al 
Zarqawi, which announces: "We have declared a fierce war on 
this evil principle of democracy and those who follow this 
wrong ideology" just days before the election, is strangely 
reminiscent of that released by the even more elusive Osama Bin 
Laden days before the US vote, said to have swayed voters in 
Bush's direction. 

Fit the profile 

"Evil principle of democracy?" Bush always said that they, the 
terrorists, hate democracy. It looks like Zarqawi is only too 
happy to fit the profile. 

If you believe that anyone believes democracy is evil, I've got 
a nice Egyptian pyramid I'd like to sell you with a free camel 
if you purchase two. 

Donald Rumsfeld was quick to acknowledge that this election 
will be far from perfect but believes a flawed election is 
better than no election. 

The trouble is democracy isn't a loaf of bread. There is no 
such thing as half democracy. Elections are either 
comprehensive, inclusive, free and fair or they are not. 

Iraqis deserve a prosperous, peaceful and democratic Iraq but I 
doubt this is possible as long as the occupation forces stay. 
They have their agenda; the Iraqi people have theirs and both 
are mutually exclusive. 

A paper entitled "Rebuilding America's Defences" drawn up by 
the Project for a New American Century in 2000 and signed up to 
by several top members of the Bush administration suggests US 
troops need to establish a permanent foothold in the Gulf, 
while keeping a low profile. 

Once Iraq is officially stamped a democracy and American 
soldiers withdraw to a series of permanent bases or behind the 
walls of the largest and most fortified US embassy in the 
world, the Strauss-cons will have achieved their objective 
occupation in democracy's clothing. 

Although whether they will be allowed to get away with this 
giant con is an entirely different matter.

Email From Fallen Soldier 


With the help of an email, you can hear in his own words what 
the youngest South Dakota soldier to die in Iraq was thinking 
before he left on the mission that killed him.

19-year-old Gunnar Becker of Forestburg died last week. One of 
his friends shares an email the young soldier sent not long 
before that.

As a senior at Artesian-Letcher high school, we showed you 
Gunnar Becker at work on his computer. Less than two years 
later, thousands of miles away on a different keyboard, he 
would type a note to his friends. It's dated January 1st, 12 
days before Becker would lose his life. 

Becker wrote, "Just thought that I would let you all know that 
we are going out for a month to [Mosul] and that i guess that 
its pretty bad there and we are expecting the worst and i 
really dont have a good feeling bout this one so i figured id 
talk to you all at least one more time 

well i gotta go

One of the recipients of that email was Becker's former 
classmate and fellow soldier Denise Lindman.

Lindman says, "I kind of took it serious. I was over there, I 
knew what he's going through so I emailed him back and talked 
to him about it."

She says Becker was worried about the mission, but later calmed 
down. And few days before his death, the two talked online.

Lindman says, "He was doing fine. He liked it. He thought they 
were doing pretty good and all that stuff."

Now, she's saved this last email, as it's become a priceless 
paper trail and a reminder that bravery doesn't always mean 
being fearless. But doing your job when you're scared.

Lindman says, "He definitely was a little too soon in his 
lifetime. We're gonna miss him. He's a hero."

Even the return address on Becker's note shows home was always 
on his mind. His email address includes the words Forestburg, 
South Dakota.

Danes charged over prisoner abuse in Iraq
A Danish intelligence officer and four military policemen have 
been charged with abuse of Iraqi prisoners at Danish 
headquarters in southern Iraq, the Danish Army says.

Reserve Captain Annemette Hommel and the four other soldiers 
could face up to one year in prison if found guilty of breaking 
military law during interrogations last year.

Capt Hommel was sent home from Iraq in July, before her tour of 
duty was up, after former unit colleagues complained about the 
way she interrogated prisoners. 

She has denied the abuse. 

Army investigators have said Capt Hommel subjected Iraqi 
prisoners to ill-treatment, including verbal humiliation, 
forcing them to maintain painful postures, and restricting 
access to food, water and toilets. 

The investigation has sent shock waves through Denmark, where 
many people still support the centre-right Government's backing 
of the US-led campaign in Iraq. 

Denmark has around 500 troops stationed near the southern city 
of Basra. 

The charges against Danish soldiers follow prosecutions of US 
personnel for abuse of Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib jail, and 
against British soldiers in southern Iraq. 

Danish news agency Ritzau reports that the former commander of 
Danish troops in Iraq, Lieutenant Colonel Henrik Flach, has 
been cleared by the probe and would not be charged.

wounds. 

Defence Minister Antonio Martino says he is "deeply saddened" 
by the news. 

The aircraft had been on a patrol along the Euphrates river 
south of Nasiriyah when it drew fire. 

ANSA reports tension has been high in the city, where a 
Portuguese patrol had been shot at before the incident 
involving the Italian troops. 

Italy has deployed 3,000 troops in southern Iraq. 

Mr Martino has told a parliamentary committee that the area 
under Italian control "is absolutely not secure from attempts 
by groups opposed to the (Iraqi) Government and the (US-led) 
coalition to undermine the electoral process" in Iraq. 

General elections are to be held in Iraq on January 30. 

Mr Martino says that the Italian contingent would stay in 
Iraq "the time needed". 

The Italian military headquarters in Iraq had been targeted in 
the explosion of a truck bomb in November 2003 leaving 17 
troops and two civilians dead. 

Two other troops have also died since, one on patrol and the 
other in a car accident.

A group of people from Iceland have taken out a full-page 
advertisement in The New York Times apologising to Iraqis for 
the invasion of their country.

More than 4,000 Icelanders paid for the ad, which demands that 
Iceland be immediately removed from the list of invaders in the 
so-called coalition of the willing. 

Iceland has no military and has contributed only its 
government's verbal support for the US-led invasion in 2003. 

A recent Gallup poll indicates that four out of five Icelanders 
want their country to remove its support, but the Government 
has ruled out any policy change.

Al-Zarqawi loyalists behead Iraqi soldier
Militants loyal to the Jordanian-born militant, Abu Musab al-
Zarqawi, have beheaded an Iraqi soldier in broad daylight and 
left a note warning other Iraqi troops to quit. 

Witnesses say nine men pulled up in two cars in the city of 
Ramadi, dragged the soldier out of one of the vehicles and cut 
off his head. 

A note was found at the scene warning Iraqi soldiers, National 
Guards and police that a similar fate awaited them. 

A radical Iraqi group, the Army of Ansar al-Sunna has repeated 
a statement on its website that it has beheaded a British 
national and a Swede, after abducting them in the country's 
north.

This is possibly the worst website I've seen in quite a long

inform everyone that morale is quite high.  We have already

intention.

where I eat, at FOB Marez, in Mosul... It was a welcome break 
from the innocent unarmed Iraqi's they sometimes kill by the

least they got the target right for once. 

  We have used enormous restraint in Iraq - because many of us 
Americans care about the people there. The press doesn't usually 
show that the Iraqi people know it.  I have seen this first hand 
and can dispute this with anyone.

  The situation at Abu Graib outraged me... It undermined a 
great deal of the work that we (thousands) strived so hard to 
accomplish there.  The justice of sentencing those guards to 10 
or 15 years in prison could only be justified if the abused 
prisoners were hired as their guards. In this way, the abuse was 
maybe the only victory of the insurgency.

  The Lancet, a British medical journal, gave an early report 
that coalition forces killed some 100,000 people. This is 
utterly false - a respected science journal should never extend 
it's credibility on such flawed methods of surveying... a more 
accurate count(which is continuously updated) is located at

  Finally, when I see a dead child, there is nothing more 
repulsive to me.  I have seen the photographs of mourning 
parents and dead children... and I remember the individual 
childs face.  Because of this, I have seen on a few internet 
sites, the faces of children in Genin (Lebanon), and Kordish 
Iraq during Saddam Husein's genocide of a village there.  
  Only this time, the caption says that these are the victims of 
American aggression.  There is a powerful anti-American 
propaganda campaign happening - much of it is totally ludicrous.

  But if it is bad, and it is about America, the haters and

WASHINGTON: The rise of China and India as global players is 
heralding an Asian Century in place of a receding American 
Century, a US intelligence report said on Thursday. 


In a far reaching projection, the CIA-commissioned report 
compared the rise of the two Asian giants to the advent of a 
united Germany in the 19th century and a powerful United States 
in the 20th century, and said the event will transform the 
world's geopolitical landscape, with impacts potentially as 
dramatic as those in the previous two centuries. 

"In the same way that commentators refer to the 1900s as 
the 'American Century,' the 21st century may be seen as the 
time when Asia, led by China and India, comes into its own," 
the report titled 'Mapping the Global Future,' observed. "A 
combination of sustained high economic growth, expanding 
military capabilities, and large populations will be at the 
root of the expected rapid rise in economic and political power 
for both countries." 

The report is the third in a series of five-yearly forecasts of 
global trends published by the National Intelligence Council, a 
group of senior intelligence analysts who report to the CIA 
director. The earlier reports were for 2010 and 2015. The 
forecasts for 2020 were based on consultations with more than 
1,000 non-government experts at 30 conferences on five 
continents over the past year. 

Expectedly, the 2005 report for the 2020 projection reflected 
the post 9/11 changes, but it also contained a degree of 
certitude not seen in the two previous studies, including a 
more upbeat assessment for India. "Barring an abrupt reversal 
of the process of globalization or any major upheavals in these 
countries, the rise of these new powers (China and India) is a 
virtual certainty," it predicted. 

The report said while most forecasts indicate that by 2020 
China's gross national product (GNP) will exceed that of 
individual Western economic powers except US India's GNP will 
have overtaken or be on the threshold of overtaking European 
economies.

Israel is embarking upon a more aggressive approach to the war 
on terror that will include staging targeted killings in the 
United States and other friendly countries, former Israeli 
intelligence officials told United Press International.

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has forbidden the practice 
until now, these sources said, speaking on condition of 
anonymity.

The Israeli statements were confirmed by more than a half dozen 
former and currently serving U.S. foreign policy and 
intelligence officials in interviews with United Press 
International.

But an official at the Israeli Embassy in Washington told 
UPI: "That is rubbish. It is completely untrue. Israel and the 
United States have such a close and co-operative intelligence 
relationship, especially in the field of counter-terrorism, 
that the assertion is ludicrous."

With the appointment of Meir Dagan, the new director of 
Israel's Mossad secret intelligence service, Sharon is 
preparing "a huge budget" increase for the spy agency as part 
of "a tougher stance in fighting global jihad (or holy war)," 
one Israeli official said.

Since Sharon became Israeli prime minister, Tel Aviv has mainly 
limited its practice of targeted killings to the West Bank and 
Gaza because "no one wanted such operations on their 
territory," a former Israeli intelligence official said.

Another former Israeli government official said that under 
Sharon, "diplomatic constraints have prevented the Mossad from 
carrying out 'preventive operations' (targeted killings) on the 
soil of friendly countries until now."

He said Sharon is "reversing that policy, even if it risks 
complications to Israel's bilateral relations."

A former Israeli military intelligence source agreed: "What 
Sharon wants is a much more extensive and tough approach to 
global terrorism, and this includes greater operational 
maneuverability."

Does this mean assassinations on the soil of allies?

"It does," he said.

"Mossad is definitely being beefed up," a U.S. government 
official said of the Israeli agency's budget increase. He 
declined to comment on the Tel Aviv's geographic expansion of 
targeted killings.

An FBI spokesman also declined to comment, saying: "This is a 
policy matter. We only enforce federal laws."

A congressional staff member with deep knowledge of 
intelligence matters said, "I don't know on what basis we would 
be able to protest Israel's actions." He referred to the recent 
killing of Qaed Salim Sinan al Harethi, a top al Qaida leader, 
in Yemen by a remotely controlled CIA drone.

"That was done on the soil of a friendly ally," the staffer 
said.

But the complications posed by Israel's new policy are real.

"Israel does not have a good record at doing this sort of 
thing," said former CIA counter-terrorism official Larry

A statement from US marines based in Falluja said on Friday that

It gave no further details, saying any information might be used 
by fighters waging daily attacks on US-led forces in Iraq. 

Another US military statement issued in Baghdad said a 1st 
Infantry Division soldier died while "supporting Task Force 
Olympia operations" near Iraq's northern city of Mosul on 
Thursday. 

The statement also gave no details but said the incident was 
under investigation. 

The deaths raised to 1072 the number of American troops killed

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - A roadside bomb killed seven U.S. soldiers 
in northwest Baghdad and two Marines were killed in western 
Iraq on Thursday, the deadliest day for American forces since a 
suicide attack on a U.S. base last month. 

The bombing came as Iraq extended a state of emergency by 30 
days to battle militants whose attacks have surged ahead of 
this month's elections. The prime minister warned the number of 
assaults would only rise as voting day draws closer. 

Just three weeks before the Jan. 30 elections, the commander of 
U.S. ground forces in Iraq acknowledged that security is poor 
in four of 18 Iraqi provinces. But Lt. Gen. Thomas Metz told a 
briefing in the capital that delaying the vote would only 
increase the danger. 

``I can't guarantee that every person in Iraq that wants to 
vote, goes to a polling booth and can do that safely,'' Metz 
said. ``We're going to do everything possible to create that 
condition for them, but we are fighting an enemy who cares less 
who he kills, when he kills and how he kills. A delay in the 
elections just gives the thugs and terrorists more time to 
continue their intimidation, their cruelty, their brutal 
murders of innocent people.'' 

The soldiers with Task Force Baghdad were on patrol Thursday 
evening when their Bradley fighting vehicle hit the explosive, 
the military said in a statement. Everyone inside the Bradley 
was killed. 

No other details were immediately available about the latest 
attack. But Iraq's insurgents have frequently targeted American 
troops with crude explosives planted in roads and

Jan. 4 (Xinhuanet) -- Five US soldiers were killed in three 
separate attacks in Iraq on Tuesday, the US military said. 

    Three soldiers with the Task Force Baghdad were killed in a 
roadside bomb attack in the capital at about 11:00 am (0800 
GMT), it said, adding that two others were also wounded. 

    Shortly before, one US soldier was killed in a similar 
roadside bomb attack which also wounded another. The attack took 
place near the restive city of Balad, some 90 km north of 
Baghdad. 

    Elsewhere, a US marine died on Tuesday in the al-Anbar 
province,while pitched battles were still ongoing in Fallujah. 

    The latest deaths brought to over 1,050 the number of US 
military personnel killed in action in Iraq since the US-led war

Department warned President Bush this week that the United 
States and its Iraqi allies are not winning the battle against 
Iraqi insurgents Iraqi insurgents who are trying to derail the

equals  losing .

On New Year s Eve it was reported that, "the last six months of 
2004 proved the deadliest period for US forces in Iraq, despite 
the formal end of the US-led occupation in June."

 


So combine these two facts: 
the CIA, et al agree the US is losing in Iraq 
the 6 months after  the transfer of sovereignty  were the 
deadliest yet

and it is clear that the US is not  making progress on the 
ground  as Bush claims.

The  occupation is counterproductive  seems a much more 
accurate assessment. Who said that? Why it was 
that  unelectable  candidate Dennis Kucinch.

Back in June Kucinich said, "The June 30th sovereignty date 
this resolution discusses is a hoax. " He was certainly correct 
with that assessment, maybe Dennis is still on the mark today 
when he says that, "Free and fair elections cannot, and will 
not, happen under such conditions. The January election can 
only be a sham."

    
Why is America accepting this continuing atrocity perptrated in 
the name of  our safety ? Clearly the Bush administration is 
lying about the "important progress on the ground" in Iraq, why 
can t the average American see that they are also lying about 
why we need to stay?

"We can t cut and run" sounds good, as does "we re making 
progress on the ground," but they are clear fabrications. You 
know when a child gets caught doing a bad thing, they make 
stuff up so they won t get in trouble.... it is very clear 
that s what the Bush adminstration is doing on very nearly 
every issue foreign and domestic.

The reason America continues to remain duped is because all of 
the  experts  on all the tv networks and radio stations 
agree:  The President  is a brave and noble leader, he is  firm 
and resolute , and  we must not let the terrorists shake our 
resolve .

Congress is not investigating and impeaching Bush (like they 
did Clinton over Lewinsky), so these lies must not be that 
important. The media is not investigating, and we all know it s 
a  liberal media , so these tiny white lies about Iraq are ok, 
because we can t  lose our resolve .

At some point, every American will face the truth of the 
matter, The Bush team is lying and both Congress and the media 
covering for them.

If that describes you at this moment, please do not blindly 
believe me- think for yourself.

This is the logic the media is asking you to believe:

Mr. Bush (who wore a wire in the debate- and still choked) lied 
and continues to lie about this war, yet he won this election 
with more votes than any president in history. Now two months 
after the election he has the lowest approval rating of any 2nd 
term president. Did he really recieve the most votes in history?

Yet Congressman Kucinich was right about the war before it 
began - it was an unnecessary war. He was right about the 
occupation being counterproductive, basically everything he has 
said about Iraq has been spot on, yet for some reason he was 
unelectable. Why?

Step back and look at what the billion dollar media 
corporations are telling you to believe- which makes more sense?

A. Bush s lies to start the war made him a  war president  and 
therefore tough to beat... or B. Bush s lies to start the war 
made him a  war criminal  that should be tried before the ICC

A. Kucinich at 5  9" was too short to be an  electable  
candidate (Bush is 5  11")... or B. Kucinich s claim that the 
war was unnecessary and call to pull out of Iraq made 
him  unelectable  to the war profiteers

In both examples, the media has told you that choice A is the 
logical answer. Choice B was never presented to you. Do you 
still believe the media?

What can you do about it? Turn off your tv. Turn off NPR and 
all corporate radio stations. (Yes NPR is just as bad if not 
worse, it seems to make many people extremely apathetic.)

Get informed, then inform others. Boycott entertainment- it s 
just a diversion to keep you occupied while our nation is 
looted of our cash and children. Have fun creating infotainment-
 make posters, send emails, freewayblog, burn cds and pass them 
out- basically give up on mindless diversions for a while in 
order to educate as many people as possible, to turn off unplug 
as many tv sets as you can.

Magnitude 9 Cascadia Earthquake

More than three hundred years ago, at 9 PM on January 26, 1700 
one of the world's largest earthquakes occurred along the west 
coast of North America. The undersea Cascadia thrust fault 
ruptured along a 1000 km length, from mid Vancouver Island to 
northern California in a great earthquake, producing tremendous 
shaking and a huge tsunami that swept across the Pacific.

These events are recorded in the oral traditions of the First 
Nations people on Vancouver Island. The tsunami swept across 
the Pacific also causing destruction along the Pacific coast of 
Japan. It is the accurate descriptions of the tsunami and the 
accurate time keeping by the Japanese that allows us to 
confidently know the size and exact time of this great 
earthquake.

The recognition of definitive signatures in the geological 
record tells us the January 26, 1700 event was not a unique 
event, but has repeated many times at irregular intervals of 
hundreds of years. Geological evidence indicates that 13 great 
earthquakes have occurred in the last 6000 years.

The earthquake was a Magnitude 9.0 on the Richter scale, among 
the highest in recorded history. US authorities had initially 
recorded 8.0 on the Richter scale.

 

As confirmed by several reports, US scientists in Hawaii, had 
advanced knowledge regarding an impending catastrophe, but 
failed to contact their Asian counterparts.

Charles McCreery of the Pacific Warning Center in Hawaii 
confirmed that his team tried to get in touch with his 
counterparts in Asia.  According to McCreery, director of the 
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's center in 
Honolulu, the team did its utmost to contact the countries.

Note the tone of the first Bulletin above. It downplays an 
imminent catastrophe. It points to a Magnitude 8.0 Earthquake, 
subsequently revised to 8.5 and then 9. (See the texts of all 
three Bulletins in annex to this article).

The Bulletin fails to underscore the seriousness of the 
situation. It states in a routine fashion. "There is no Tsunami 
Warning or Watch in Effect" [in the Pacific]. It does not make 
any statement as to what might happen in the Indian Ocean. 
Neither does it acknowledge that the country which is worst 
hit, namely Indonesia, is a member of the Pacific tsunami 
warning system along with Thailand and Singapore.

In fact, the Bulletin is grossly misleading on the extent of 
the catastrophe caused by the earthquake and the tsunami which 
had already hit Indonesia prior to the release of the Bulletin 
(01.14 GMT), on the North Sumatra Coastline and in Banda, Aceh. 
To state that there is no tsunami or tsunami warning is 
mistaken. It had already happened!

We Did Not Know!

Nine (9.0) on the Richter scale: The Director of the Hawaii 
Warning Center stated that they did not know that the 
earthquake would generate a deadly seismic wave until it had 
hit Sri Lanka, more than one and a half hours later, at 2.30 
GMT. (see Timeline below)

"Not until the deadly wave hit Sri Lanka and the scientists in 
Honolulu saw news reports of the damage there did they 
recognize what was happening...'Then we knew there was 
something moving across the Indian Ocean,' said Charles

It is impossible that the movement of the seismic wave could 
have gone unnoticed following the initial devastating impact of 
the tidal waves in Aceh and North Sumatra immediately after 
1.00 GMT on the 26th.

Moreover, according to expert opinion, known to the scientists 
who were monitoring seismic activity, an earthquake of more 
than 6.5 on the Richter scale has the potential of triggering a 
tsunami. In other words, there should have been no hesitation 
by scientists or government officials on the likely impacts of 
an earthquake which was initially assessed at 8.0 on the 
Richter scale.

Moreover, the Hawaii Center's statement is at odds with the 
Timeline of the seismic wave disaster (see below), which no 
doubt was also being monitored on a continuous basis, once it 
hit the Indonesian and Thai coastlines by satellite imaging 
using the Global Positioning System (GPS). These satellite 
images are available to a number of agencies including the US 
military and intelligence. It should be noted, however, that 
the energy of a tsunami is transferred through open water, it 
is therefore not easily detectable in the Ocean.

It is the extreme seismic activity which provides advance 
warning prior to the tsunami reaching the coastline. But as 
pointed out above, the tsunami had already hit the Indonesian 
coast shortly shortly after 01.00 GMT:

the wavelength would be hundreds of miles long, with an 
amplitude of only a few feet. This would also make them 
unnoticeable from the air. As the waves approach the coast, 
their speed decreases and their amplitude increases. Unusual 
wave heights have been known to be over 100 feet high. However, 
waves that are 10 to 20 feet high can be very destructive and

A US soldier and an Afghan citizen have been killed in a gun 
battle close to a village in western Afghanistan, the US 
military said.


The statement says US forces came under fire during an early 
morning search of a compound near Shindand airfield in Herat 
province, which borders Iran. 


"One US soldier and one Afghan citizen were killed in an 
exchange of fire in Shindand when US soldiers were searching a 
compound," Major Mark McCann said. 

 

"No further details are available at this time," McCann added. 

 

The Afghani civilian was killed at the scene while the US 
soldier died a short time later at the airfield as a result of 
his wounds, the statement said. 

 

The soldier's name was being withheld until his next of kin 
could be notified. 

 

The military did not identify the Afghan, or say whether he was 
a fighter or a bystander.



But a local commander, Akhtar Muhammad Husaini, said the 
compound belonged to a former commander in the region, Mullah 
Dost.

US and Afghan government forces have been stationed at Shindand 
airfield, about 650km west of the capital, Kabul. 

 

It was unclear if Sunday's search, which the US military 
described as "routine," was aimed at suspected Taliban fighters 
or part of efforts to disarm local commanders.

Some 18,000 US-led troops are still stationed in Afghanistan, 
in search of what they say are remnants of al-Qaida and the 
Taliban.
